I'm not sure I need to add anything else

I discovered Baths (Will Wiesenfeld) a few weeks ago and he has been getting the repeat treatment in my ipod ever since. The mix of electronic with a healthy touch of classical influence pulled me into it right away.

While Baths is brand new to the music scene, you definitely wouldn’t know that based on his first album, Cerulean. The entire album has an amazing flow to it and you can listen to it from start to finish without skipping any songs, if you so choose.

And yes, that is a bad play on words in the title. Thanks for noticing.

So What If I Found It On The Radio?!
So What If I Found It On The Radio?! avatar

I heard this tune driving in my car the other day on the local “modern rock” station and something struck me about it; mainly that it wasn’t ear gouging garbage like 95% of everything else they play. In fact upon listening to it again at home, I realized I quite liked it. The soft melodic guitar and vocals build up into utter chaos and garbled distorted power chords and syncopated drumming that create a nice contrast.

I’ve been hearing a lot of good buzz about Cage The Elephant and their latest album, “Thank You Happy Birthday”. I was less impressed by other singles they had on youtube, but the singles that major labels put out are usually the worst songs on any given album (why is that, by the way? I still think “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is Nirvana’s worst song ever).  In any case, this song is awesome and this band is one to probably keep an eye on, enjoy.

Sims sure did take his sweet time dropping this one

One of Doomtrees finest is finally back with a new full length album. Sims and his new album “Bad Time Zoo” (Formerly titled “The Veldt”) is scheduled to release on February 15th, 2011.

There are some very sweet pre-order options on the Doomtree website, so I heavily suggest heading on over there and reserving your copy as soon as possible.

As for the new single, it is titled “Burn It Down” and it is produced by Lazerbeak (as is the entire album). Give it a listen here.

Son of a Bricklayer & Shitao’s “La jetée”

I know my cohort Casey recently mentioned that good instrumental hip-hop is hard to find these days, but producers Son of a Bricklayer and Shitao are here to contest that claim.  This is a short little 8 song EP they put out together, intended to be a soundtrack for a film of the same name as the album. The film, made by Chris Marker, was what inspired Terry Gilliam to make the movie “12 Monkeys”.  Listening to these beats for me evokes that same post-apocalyptic sense of mystery and confusion one gets from watching “12 Monkeys”.  The songs are full of sound and vocal clips from the original “La jetée” and reek of nostalgic record crackle and dusty phonograph.

I have not yet watched the original film by Chris Marker but you can see it here if you so desire. It’s French and in black and white so it must be good and not pretentious at all.

The entire EP of instrumentals can be downloaded from here.  Here are my two favorites, the first by Shitao and the second (my favorite on the EP) by Son of a Bricklayer:

Kno – Graveyard feat. Sheisty Khrist

When Kno’s solo album Death Is Silent dropped a month back I was very impressed. The word is he got tired of waiting on rappers to drop verses over his beats so he decided to drop them himself on a solo album. That isn’t to say he didn’t get help on this album, as there are guest appearances by many rappers such as Deacon, Natti, Tonedeff, and Sheisty Khrist among others. There are some borderline silly lines in this song but the beat is superb and Kno definitely has one of my favorite flows currently.

Produced by Miami Beat Wave, Guilty Simpson is first up on the mic and kills this one. “Instead they follow these impostors faithfully like sheep, and shit on every rapper that might want to rhyme deep.” One of my favorite verses of the year for sure.

The video is directed by Adam Pillon.

A few weeks ago I heard this song and was amazed by it, Ace always puts out solid music. To my surprise, however, this song is getting incredibly slept on by everyone. This can not stand. The video is of Aesop, Cage reading a comic book, and Jeremy Fish riding around in a van.

Evidence and Murs are definitely two of the top emcee’s of the last ten years, and this new track is undoubtedly on par with their previous works.  Murs talks a lot about Living Legends and Evidence…surprisingly doesn’t talk about weed in it.   The production is done by DJ Khalil.

Big Z’s Big Remixes

WHERE IZ LEBRAWN?

WHAR IZ LEEBRAWN?

Big Z has been making some small waves on the internet blogosphere of late with his ridiculously awesome hip-hop remixes.  I would post about nine different songs right now if I thought it was prudent, but it isn’t.  Instead I’m going to post my four favorite and let you download the rest (for freezies my neezies) from here.  Most of the beats are relatively simplistic, but they are so well executed they can make rappers I don’t typically like (ie. the Drake track below) sound good.  Most of these guys rap on beats that are so overproduced I can’t make it to the second verse before I come down with a severe case of vertigo. Big Z remedies that by bringing hip-hop back to it’s roots: The boom and the bap.

*DISCLAIMER*  Unfortunately, Zydrunas Ilgauskas didn’t actually make any of these remixes. That shouldn’t stop you from thoroughly enjoying them all.

Good instrumental hip hop is hard to find

Look at them perdy lights.

Other than Ratatat, it seems like ever since RJD2 stopped using samples in his music there has been a void in the instrumental hip hop/electronic/trip hop game as of late. This is where Derek Vincent Smith, A.K.A. Pretty Lights comes in. If you’re like me, sometimes you just want to put on an album, zone out, and bob your head. Pretty Lights have six albums, all of which are extremely heavy in the head bobbing department.  This isn’t anything that will have you deep in thought deciphering the lyrics (because well, there aren’t many lyrics), but this will help you to remember why you started loving electronic and hip hop music in the first place.

The best part? Every single album is free on his website, although I do highly suggest donating.
